Sports briefs: San Rafael wins bracket at Sierra Shootout

The San Rafael High boys water polo team went four for four at the Sierra Shootout this weekend to win the tournament’s silver bracket.

The Bulldogs defeated Ukiah 19-5 and Dixon 15-3 to advance to the semifinals. From there, San Rafael rolled past Moreau Catholic 23-11 to make the championship game where it prevailed 8-6 in a defensive battle against Clayton Valley.

Santiago Jimenez scored five times in the semifinals, while Nathan Spilly, James Lamb, and Sam Smith netted hat tricks.

The Bulldogs were tied with Clayton Valley 6-6 through three quarters before the defense posted a shutout the rest of the way. Spilly and Finn O’Neil scored clutch goals to lift San Rafael to the victory.

College cross country

Sophomore Jared Wright broke the school record in the 8K for Dominican, helping the Penguins to a third-place finish at the Kim Duyst Twilight Invitational on Saturday.

Wright led for much of the race before settling for a fifth-place finish with a time of 24 minutes, 13.3 seconds.

Six of Dominican’s runners sets personal bests on Saturday as the team scored 69 points.

Juliana Mendez helped lead the women’s team to similar success — a third-place finish with all five runners setting personal bests.

Mendez took second with a time of 21 minutes, 16 seconds — less than a second behind Stanislaus State’s Sabrina Garcia.

Men’s tennis

Former Marin Academy coach Geoff Martinez was victorious in his semifinal match at the USTA National 65 Championships on Sunday, picking up a 6-2, 7-5 win against No. 4 seed Tim Garcia.

Martinez will take aim at his fifth US National title in Monday morning’s final. Martinez last won a national title in 2011 and is appearing in his first final since bi-lateral hip replacement surgery in 2015.
