Sports briefs: Drake’s Woodhead scores as Stanford wins title
Former Drake High standout Quinn Woodhead scored a goal for the Stanford University men’s water polo team as it edged Cal 9-8 to claim the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship on Sunday in Los Angeles.
Woodhead’s goal came in the first quarter and helped turn the tide. Cal scored the first three goals of the game before Woodhead got Stanford on the board. The Cardinal used a 6-0 run spanning the second and third quarters to take control of the game.
Cal scored the final three goals of the game, pulling within 9-8 with 27 seconds remaining.
Stanford advances to the NCAA Championships, which take place from March 18-21 in Los Angeles.
Cross country
The Drake boys retained their unbeaten start to the season with a 16-47 victory against Marin Catholic on Saturday.
Nate Wolford picked up the individual win in 10 minutes and 34 seconds on the 2.1-mile course on Drake’s campus. Nicolas Parr placed second for Drake. Ziggy Nacco finished fifth to lead MC.
The Marin Catholic girls put up a perfect score, 15-50, to beat Drake. Gigi Clifford finished first in a time of 11:11. Sam Wallenstrom placed second for the Wildcats.
