Sports briefs: Tam girls outduel Marin Catholic in the pool

Sam Sternfels scored six goals to lead second-seeded the Tam High girls water polo team past No. 10 Marin Catholic, 13-8, in the second round of the North Coast Section Division II tournament. The Red-tailed Hawks scored for seven goals in the second period, giving them enough cushion to weather a 4-0 run by the Wildcats in the final frame.

Thea Falvey led MC with six goals and Kiera DeLacey added a pair. Emily Peters was a difference-maker for Tam with three goals, while Jessica Bukowski, Avery Emison, Abby Moll and Madeline Uhlhorn-Thornton each found the back of the net to round out Tam’s scoring effort. Goalkeeper Sofia Hamner stopped nine Wildcats shots in the win. The Red-tailed Hawks face off against No. 3 Justin Siena in the semifinals on Wednesday.

• No. 5 Terra Linda’s deepest postseason run of the decade came to an end against No. 4 Northgate in a back-and-forth, 6-5 defeat. Ryann Luchessi’s hat trick wasn’t quite enough offense for the Trojans in a defensive battle that featured 12 saves by goalkeeper Catherine Stengel. Meredith Case also totaled four steals, shutting down Northgate’s best player and holding her to just one goal and one assist.

Boys water polo

Tam junior Willem Palmer racked up eight goals, a season-high for any Red-tailed Hawk, to fuel a 14-9 win over fifth-seeded California High in the second round of the NCS D-I tournament.

“It was the Willem Palmer show,” said coach Bob Kustel, who estimates it’s the most goals scored by a Tam player in the past five years.

The Red-tailed Hawks now must take down No. 1 Acalanes on Wednesday in order to reach the championship game. Acalanes edged No. 8 Redwood, 14-11, on Saturday afternoon.

“That just shows you that Acalanes can be vulnerable,” Kustel said. “If we bring our A-game, I think we have a good shot.”

• Jonah Albers and Ethan Levinson each scored four goals in No. 2 Terra Linda’s 16-7 victory over Alameda in the NCS D-II quarterfinals. Leland Stilson and Calvin Cunnan also registered hat trick in a big offensive day for the Trojans. Amade Colenbrander anchored the defense with four steals, adding five assists on the offensive end. TL advances to the semifinals against Northgate, a rematch of a one-goal game that went the Trojans’ way during the regular season. If TL can return the title game, it will be an impressive feat considering the team graduated 13 seniors after last season.

Men’s soccer

Roberto Garcia scored in the ninth minute and Luke Raley added a pair in the second half to seal Dominican’s 3-0 win against Notre Dame de Namur. The victory extends the Penguins’ program-long win streak to seven games while Raley extended his lead as the PacWest’s top point-scorer. Dominican hosts Concordia on Thursday afternoon before a date with nationally-ranked Azusa Pacific next Saturday.

Women’s basketball

Four players scored in double figures but Dominican University’s fourth-quarter rally fell short in a season-opening, 69-60 loss against Sonoma State.
The Penguins (0-1) trailed by 17 early in the fourth quarter but pulled within 7 in the final minute. Jerusha Paine led the way with 16 points. Marisa Mondave and Julia Razo scored 12 apiece and Brittney Cedeno added 10 points. Paine and Razo pulled down eight rebounds each. Ugochi Anudokem paced the Seawolves with 23 points and 14 rebounds

Women’s soccer

Freshman midfielder Tanya Bills had her first multi-goal game for Dominican to carry the Penguins past Notre Dame de Namur, 3-1. Bills struck early in the second minute from a header off a corner kick. Two minutes into the second half, she scored the go-ahead goal from the top of the box to give Dominican (4-6-6, 1-5-3 PacWest) its first conference victory of the season. Goalkeeper Alyssa Ramos recorded three saves in the win.

Women’s volleyball

Dominican’s Catherine Johnson led all players with 22 kills, but Notre Dame de Namur denied the Penguins’ bid for their third win of the season in a 25-21, 25-27, 17-25, 25-15, 15-11 defeat. Tiffany Wong tallied 14 kills and 25 digs for a Dominican squad which couldn’t quite capitalize on its 2-1 advantage. Rebecca Smith also pitched in a double-double with 21 assists, 14 digs and seven kills for the Penguins (2-21, 2-16 PacWest).

Local 5k sign-ups

Registration is now open for the Sixth Annual Jingle Bells 5K and Children’s Fun Run, which is set for Dec.15 along the scenic Sausalito waterfront.

The race benefits the Dipsea Race Foundation’s Dipsea Kidz program and Sausalito on the Waterfront’s Child Education and Activity Fund program. The event begins at 8:30 a.m. on Spinnaker Drive with the 5K race followed at approximately 9:15 a.m. by the Children’s Fun Run and a pancake brunch in the Spinnaker Restaurant hosted by the Sausalito Lions Club.

The entry free is $40 for adults and $25 for children under 15. The cost covers a race T-shirt and admission to the post-race breakfast/brunch. All participants in the Children’s Fun Run will receive a medal.
