Colonie volleyball player dies after medical event at Boston tournament
COLONIE, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The volleyball player who went into cardiac arrest at a tournament in Boston has died. John Verbo, a junior at Colonie Central High School, was 16 years old.
According to his obituary, Verbo passed away on February 25 at Tufts Medical Center in Boston. He is survived by his parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, and many friends.
Verbo was part of the Capital Sliders Volleyball Club who were competing at the Boston Volleyball Festival. According to Boston Police, officers responded outside of the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center for a cardiac arrest report on February 21 before 10 p.m.
Colonie Central High School Principal William Behrle released the following statement on his passing:
"We are deeply saddened by the passing of John Verbo, and our hearts go out to his family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. John was a bright presence on the court and throughout our school community. His leadership, dedication, and kindness left a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. This is a heartbreaking loss for our school, and our priority is to support the Verbo family, our students and staff as they navigate their grief."
Services for Verbo are being held on Saturday at 9 a.m. at Christ Our Light Catholic Church in Loudonville. Memorial contributions can be made to the Colonie High School Booster Club for Volleyball.
