Volleyball Today: Dayton rolls on in A10; hurricane affecting schedules

Dayton, ranked No. 22 in the AVCA top 25, had 20 aces and won its 25th Atlantic 10 match in a row Tuesday when the Flyers won at Duquesne.

Dayton was the only ranked team in action on a night when High Point swept at Brown, winning the third set 37-35.

Wednesday, there were 22 matches on the schedule, including a big one in the ACC when SMU goes to Pittsburgh, but some matches have already been canceled or postponed because of the impending arrival of Hurricane Milton. Liberty’s Conference USA matches at FIU on Tuesday and Wednesday were postponed.

And Friday’s Iowa State at UCF Big 12 match has been canceled. Iowa State noted that the match will be considered a no contest in the standings and will not be made up.

NCAA volleyball Wednesday

The showcase match of the day is in the ACC, when undefeated Pittsburgh (14-0, 4-0), ranked No. 1 in the VolleyballMag Super 16 Media Poll, is home for No. 14 SMU (12-3, 4-0). Their first ACC meeting can be seen on the ACC Network. 

Both Big Ten matches are on the Big Ten Network when No. 11 Oregon (11-2, 3-1) is at No. 16 USC (11-3, 3-1) and UCLA (7-6, 1-3) plays at Washington (13-1, 3-1). 

The two Arizona teams play each for the first time as members of the Big 12 when Arizona (12-3, 1-3) goes to No. 12 Arizona State (14-2, 3-1). Also in the Big 12, Iowa State (8-6, 2-1) is at Houston (7-7, 2-2). 

There are three matches in the SEC, AVCA No. 19 Florida (10-4, 1-2) home for Mississippi State (7-6, 1-2), Texas A&M (11-2, 2-1) at Ole Miss (12-3, 2-1) and Missouri (9-5) home for Southeast Missouri State (7-9) of the Ohio Valley Conference.

Dayton (15-1, 5-0 A10) won 25-11, 25-17, 22-25, 25-20 at Duquesne (11-6, 2-3) as the Flyers had a program-record 20 aces, eight by Taylor Russess, who also had 10 kills with two errors in 21 attacks to hit .381 to go with two blocks and four digs. Lexie Almodovar led with 13 kills but hit .093 and had an assist, an ace, a block and nine digs. Alayna Yates had eight kills with no errors in 18 tries and three blocks, one solo. Setter Alyssa Smith had four kills, 41 assists, three aces, a block and 12 digs, and libero Karissa Kaminski had three aces, 13 digs, four assists and a kill in her only attempt … Also in the A10, VCU swept at Davidson 25-18, 25-23, 33-31. Julia Rienks had 18 kills, hit .560 and had two solo blocks and Anja Kujundzic had 14 digs, three assists and two aces …

In the lone Big West match, UC Davis swept visiting UC Riverside as Julia Ng had 14 digs, two assists and two aces … 

Colorado State is 9-6 and stayed top the Mountain West at 5-0 after beating visiting Wyoming in four behind 17 kills from Malaya Jones, who hit .308 and had an assist, two of her team’s 19 aces, eight digs and two blocks. Kate Yoshimoto had 19 digs and nine assists … 

There were four Conference USA matches as Sam Houston won in four at Louisiana Tech, Western Kentucky swept visiting Middle Tennessee, Kennesaw State swept at Jacksonville State and UTEP improved to 15-2, 5-0 by sweeping NM State. WKU’s Kenadee Coyle had 10 kills in as many attacks to hit 1.000 and had three blocks … 

There was MACtion as Buffalo won in four at Akron and Ball State did the same at Miami. Buffalo’s Manoela Forlin had 14 kills, an ace, nine digs and three blocks, one solo, and Arkron’s Lauren Baker and Emanouela Christodoulou had 17 kills apiece … 

In the two Missouri Valley Conference matches, UIC swept visiting Valparaiso and Murray State pulled off a reverse sweep to beat visiting Belmont

There were five Southland Conference matches. Southeastern Louisiana improved to 13-4, 5-0 and won its 22nd league match in a row with a lopsided sweep of visiting New Orleans. Cicily Hidalgo had 11 kills with one error in 19 swings to hit .519 and had three of her team’s 12 aces, an assist and 10 digs … Texas A&M-Corpus Christi won in five at UTRGV behind 15 kills each from Kyndal Payne and Leah Stolfus. Payne had 13 digs and five blocks, four solo, and Stolfus had one error in 26 attacks to hit .538 and had two assists, an ace, four digs and four blocks … Stephen F. Austin (13-5, 5-0) kept pace with SLU by weeping at Lamar as Katherine Holtman had 13 kills with one error in 21 attacks to hit .571 and had two digs and a solo block … McNeese swept visiting Nicholls and UIW beat visiting Houston Christian in five as Calissa Allison and Finley Evans had 15 kills apiece … 

High Point of the Big South, on a northern trip, swept a wild one — 25-13, 25-19, 37-35 — at the Ivy League’s Brown as Dylan Maberry had 14 kills, hit .344, and had an assist, an ace, 10 digs and a block … FDU of the NEC won in four at the CAA’s Stony Brook as Avery Blain had 17 kills and a block … Chattanooga of the SoCon swept visiting Alabama A&M of the SWAC as Breanah Rives had 13 kills with one error in 28 attacks to hit .429 and added two assists, an ace and 13 digs.
