Volleyball Today: NCAA reverse sweeps galore; big upset for USF

A big upset and reverse sweeps. Lots of reverse sweeps.

Just another Friday in NCAA Division I women’s volleyball, but the number of comebacks from 0-2 deficits was incredible.

Among the reverse sweeps, No. 7 Penn State did it to No. 9 Kentucky on its homecourt, St. John’s did it at San Diego, West Virginia did it to visiting North Dakota State, Providence pulled it off at Brown, UConn did it at Colgate, Sacramento State did it to visiting NM State, Murray State made it happen against NC Central, Chattanooga reverse swept visiting Tennessee State and then also won in five when it beat Charleston Southern, North Dakota did it to visiting SIUE, Middle Tennessee pulled it off against visiting Southeast Missouri State, App State did it to visiting ETSU but then got swept by Kennesaw State, and Southeastern Louisiana got its first win against previously unbeaten Stephen F. Austin in a reverse sweep, 

The upset was by USF (South Florida) which won in five at No. 10 Florida, which is without its best player. 

The line of the day goes to UConn’s Emma Werkmeister, who had 29 kills, hit .356, and added four assists, four aces, 10 digs and a block. LSU’s Jurnee Robinson had 28 kills for the second time this season in a five-set win over FIU.

Saturday’s NCAA volleyball schedule

Saturday’s slate again is immense, with quite a few teams playing twice. 

Here are some of the top matchups:

In the ACC, Miami gets a shot at No. 1 Texas, No. 4 Louisville plays Missouri, No.6 Wisconsin is at Baylor, No. 19 Georgia Tech plays at No. 14 BYU and SMU faces Loyola Marymount. Notre Dame, which is 2-0, plays at 5-0 Michigan.

In the Big Ten, No. 2 Nebraska plays host to Montana State, No. 7 Penn State is back at it against Ball State, No. 8 Purdue puts its 5-0 mark on the line against Utah State, No. 12 Oregon faces Grand Canyo and No 18 Minnesota tries to bounce back when it plays TCU. 

Big 12 action starts with a battle of 5-0 teams when Arizona plays Alabama. No. 13 Kansas, also 5-0, plays Western Michigan.

In the SEC, Florida faces Southern Indiana, Kentucky faces James Madison and No. 21 Arkansas (5-0) plays Louisiana Tech.

The Big East’s No. 11 Creighton plays Kansas State.

Penn State (4-0) was on the ropes before bouncing back to win 19-25, 23-25, 26-24, 25-22, 15-8 at Kentucky (2-2). Camryn Hannah had 22 kills, hit .469, and had two digs and four blocks, one solo. Jess Mruzik and Taylor Trammel, who had five blocks, had 12 kills each. Maggie Mendelson had eight blocks, three solo, to go with six kills. UK’s Brooklyn DeLeye had 20 kills … 

No. 23 Baylor fought to a 23-25, 25-16, 25-21, 17-25, 16-14 victory over No. 18 Minnesota (1-2), which was coming off its upset of No. 1 Texas. Elise McGhee had 18 kills, four aces, two blocks and nine digs. Lauren Briseno had 31 digs and four assists and setter Jackie Barrett Frazier had six kills in 11 errorless tries, 42 assists, two aces, 26 digs and two blocks, one solo. Julia Hanson had 16 kills for Minnesota to go with 19 digs, two aces and two blocks and Lydia Grote had 15 kills, two aces, three blocks and seven digs. Setter Melani Shaffmaster had 43 assists, four aces and 29 digs and Zeynep Palabiyik had 29 digs and five assists …

Fourth-ranked Louisville hit .412 in a 25-14, 25-17, 23-25, 25-6 victory over South Dakota at Northern Kentucky. Anna DeBeer snapped out of her offensive slump with 12 kills, four aces and two blocks. The Cardinals had nine aces and 14 blocks … 

No. 6 Wisconsin, which started 0-3 for the first time since 1990, beat TCU 25-15, 27-29, 21-25, 25-16, 15-11 at Baylor. Sarah Franklin had 18 kills and Devyn Robinson 17 and five blocks. Melanie Parra had 21 kills for TCU to go with an assist, an ace, a block and 16 digs … 

No. 8 Purdue swept at Utah as Eva Hudson had 18 kills, three aces, three blocks and six digs …

Tenth-ranked Florida’s Kennedy Martin had 25 kills in the season opener and hasn’t played in the three matches since. The Gators lost to USF 15-25, 25-22, 12-25, 25-23, 15-10 despite having more kills (64-57), more blocks (12-7) and a higher hitting percentage (.259-196). USF (1-3), in beating its highest-ranked opponent in program history, got 18 kills each from Maria Clara Andrade and Ally Cavanaugh. Isabel Martin had 19 kills for Florida. Elli McKissock had 23 digs and seven assists … 

No. 12 Oregon won in four at Colorado State as Mimi Colyer had 19 kills, hitting .425, to go with an ace, two blocks and six digs. CSU’s Malaya Jones had 20 kills … No. 13 Kansas won in four at No. 24 Marquette as five Jayhawks had eight or more kills, 14 by Ayah Elanady … No. 15 Florida State swept Cal Poly. Iane Henke had 10 kills with no errors in 19 attacks and six blocks, one solo, and Audrey Koenig had 11 kills with one error in 29 swings to go with two assists, six digs and a solo block … No. 16 Arizona State beat UC Santa Barbara in four at San Diego behind 13 kills apiece from Shania Cromartie and Geli Cyr …No. 17 Tennessee swept LIU as Nina Cajic had 14 kills, hit .500 and had seven digs … 

No. 19 Georgia Tech swept Lipscomb at BYU s Tamara Otene had 17 kills with two errors in 29 attacks, an ace, 12 digs and a solo block … No. 20 USC beat Kansas State in four at Creighton as London Wijay had 15 kills, two assists, an ace, 11 digs and two blocks, and Ally Batenhorst had 14 kills, two assists, two aces, 15 digs and seven blocks. K-State’s Aliyah Carter had 17 kills and 13 digs … No. 21 Arkansas swept Wichita State … No. 22 Dayton hit .349 as it did the same to Wright State. Lexie Almodovar had 16 kills, hit .438, and had five digs and four blocks, one solo.

Miami, Florida, beat Indiana at Texas in four behind 18 kills from Flormarie Colon, who hit .353 and had seven digs and two blocks, one solo … Maggie Li had 23 kills for Cal in its four-set win over Utah State. Li added seven digs and two blocks … 

Queens beat Presbyterian in five and Anna Grace Sparks had 26 kills, an assist, two aces, 19 digs and a block … GCU beat Central Arkansas in five as Tatum Parrott had 23 kills, an assist, three aces, eight digs and seven blocks … 

West Virginia came back to reverse sweep North Dakota State as Quincy Coyle had 16 kills, the last one ending the match … Colorado beat Georgia in five. Georgia’s Bianna Muoneke had 24 kills, an assist, two aces, four digs and two blocks … In the reverse sweep by St. John’s at San Diego, Giorgia Walther had 22 kills, an assist, an ace, eight digs and a block … 

Louisiana-Lafayette dealt Houston a five-set in a surprising result but then lost in four to Northwestern State on the same Houston floor. Against Houston, libero Mia Yamamoto had 26 digs and eight assists and Houston counterpart Kate Georgiades had 26 digs, 10 assists and an ace. Against Northwestern State, which got 24 kills from Teresa Garza, Yamamoto had 24 more digs, 10 assists and two aces … Caitlin Volkmann had 22 kills for Sacramento State in its reverse sweep of NM State to go with an assist, an ace, 16 digs and a block … Ohio beat High Point in five and Anna Kharchynska had 23 kills … Pepperdine won in five at Hawai’i. Grace Chillingsworth had 20 kills, hit .381, and had eight digs and a block …

LSU beat FIU in five at Duke and Jurnee Robinson had 28 kills, hit .333, and had two aces, eight digs and two blocks … Murray State pulled off its reverse sweep against NC Central and then swept Elon. Darci Metzger had 20 kills in the first match … Tennessee Tech beat Towson in five at Charlotte as Madolyn Isringhausen had 25 kills, hit .375, and had three aces, 13 digs and a solo block … Texas A&M hit .354 in a sweep of Texas State as Logan Lednicky had 19 kills, hit .500, and had an ace, four digs and a solo block … Amaris Smith had 23 kills for CSUN in a five-set win over San Francisco, the third time she’s had 23 or more kills in five matches … 

Southern Illinois won the first two sets and then held on in five over visiting Memphis, whose coach, Sean Burdette, played against his daughter, Brinley. The younger Burdette, a junior Saluki, had three kills, two aces, seven digs and a block. Earlier the Salukis lost to Jackson State.
