FSHA girls volleyball sweeps Buckley to continue on path toward success
LA CAÑADA — Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy girls volleyball is steadily building success this season.
The Tologs swept Buckley 25-13, 25-23, 25-20 on Wednesday night.
The Tologs (9-6) took advantage of their opportunities despite making mistakes of their own. Mistakes that ultimately kept the game close.
“We didn’t take control of our side of the net and made a lot of unforced errors,” Tologs head coach Trent Tcheng said. “We gave up 11 hitting errors in the third set. We got lucky because they were making just as many errors, but it doesn’t matter who you play against you can’t give up that many errors. At the end of the day, we’ve got to clean up our side of the net.”

The Tologs set the tone early and jumped out to a 14-2 lead in the first set. They closed out the set strong to take a 25-13 set win and it seemed FSHA might run away with the match.
However, the costly turnovers by the Tologs kept the Griffins (3-3) close. The Griffins held a 16-13 lead in the second set behind efforts from libero Vanessa Morgan and outside hitter Mia Cardillo.
Morgan ended the match with a game-high 18 digs while Cardillo finished with a team-high six kills and five digs.
The Tologs closed the gap and tied the game at 22 before winning the second set 25-23.
“We’ve got a bunch of young kids who are talented,” said Griffins head coach David Decker. “The goal is to keep building them up and give them the experience they need. Now it’s time to get back into the gym and work on our verticals and feel better with our serve-receive passing and communication.”
With the errors mounting in the third set for the Tologs, Buckley took full advantage. The Griffins jumped out to a 16-11 lead in the third set — their biggest lead of the match.
However, the Tologs were not going to let the Griffins ruin their sweep. Libero Elise Schoettler ended with a team-high 18 digs.
Setter Ally Du added a game-high 16 assists and outside hitter Peyton Recinos contributed a game-high 12 kills to go along with five digs.
It was enough for the Tologs to roar back and secure a 25-20 third-set victory to end the match.
“I wanted to bring all the energy I could for our team today,” said Recinos. “Playing with Ally (Du) makes the game easier and she brings so much IQ to the team. All that’s left for us to do when we get out there is doing the best we can with all the work we’ve done in practice and that’s what we did today.”
