Marin Briefs: MVP Osborn leads Trojans to volleyball title

Cici Osborn was named the MVP of the St. Helena Tournament on Saturday, leading the Terra Linda High girls volleyball team to a 6-0 record and the title.

The Trojans (7-1) went 3-0 in pool play, sweeping through Piner, St Helena and St. Pats. TL defeated Rio Lindo and Healdsburg in the first two rounds of the bracket before downing MCAL foe San Marin, 25-17, 25-16, in the title game.

Osborn, an outside hitter who had 32 kills, 31 digs and five aces on the day, was joined by TL’s Ruby Kuerschner and San Marin setter Emma Bach as Marin players on the all-tournament team. Kuerscher had 53 assists and 23 aces.

TL also got strong performances from Olivia Brewster (24 kills, seven blocks, two aces) and libero Nadia Hutchinson (45 digs).

San Marin coach Michael Mann also singled out Sylvia Tuerke and Alison Hoburg for their outstanding play on his team’s unexpected run to the final.

The Mustangs (4-2) took down Rio Vista and Sonoma Academy in pool play before dropping a three-setter against Healdsburg. San Marin defeated St. Pats in the quarterfinals then edged Sonoma Academy in a three-set semifinal.

• Natalia Clifford had 13 kills and four aces to help Tam to a season-opening 25-13, 25-17, 25-16 victory against Sonoma Valley on Friday night. Clifford was one of three players with four aces for the Red-tailed Hawks, along with setter Wesley Slavin and Malia Parsons. Slavin added 18 assists and Parson led the team in digs.

Water Polo

Archie Williams High School grad and Sleepy Hollow Aquatics star Haakon Lacy is expected to see action in net on Sunday when the. U.S. National men’s cadet team takes on Malta in the opener of  the weeklong FINA U16 Water Polo World Championships in Greece. The team is coached by Redwood High School men’s coach Rudy Kardos.

Golf

Marin Community Clinics is hosting a fundraiser golf tournament at Meadow Club in Fairfax on Oct. 3. Registration is due by Sept. 7 and includes 18 holes of golf, contests, a boxed lunch, an awards dinner, golf jacket and more. Proceeds benefit Marin Community Clinics.
