Sports briefs: MC’s Geissberger named MaxPreps All American

Marin Catholic outside hitter Kari Geissberger was named as a second-team all-around All American by MaxPreps.com on Tuesday. Geissberger piled up 404 kills, 179 digs, 54 blocks and 19 aces to power the Wildcats during a season in which they made a deep playoff run all the way to the State Open Division girls volleyball championship game.

Geissberger is committed to play for the Loyola Marymount women’s volleyball team starting next season.

Penguins fall

The Dominican University women’s basketball team ran into a buzzsaw on the final day of the year, falling 123-89 against the Academy of Art.

Jerusha Paine scored 33 points on 15-of-21 shooting for the Penguins (4-7, 1-4 PacWest) but Academy of Art raced out to a 34-23 lead in the first quarter then outscored Dominican by 17 points in the second quarter to pull away before the half.

Paine also had a team-high nine rebounds for Dominican, which got double-digit scoring performances from Marisa Mondave (16) and Julia Razo (13).

Academy of Art (4-4, 2-2) got 33 points from Josselyn Morris, who made nine of her 13 attempted 3-pointers.
