COSTA MESA, Calif. – Facing its toughest test of the early year, the SDC women's volleyball team took on No. 18 Vanguard Saturday night to open GSAC play.

The loss drops the Hawks to 5-2 overall and 0-1 in the GSAC. The Lions win their conference opener to improve to 10-2 and 1-0 respectively.

SDC didn't help themselves in the loss. The Hawks tallied 24 hitting errors and eight service errors.       Malia Koloamantangi led with seven kills. Anekka Guy was next with six.

In the first set, the Hawks held a slight lead. But the Lions took charge on a 10-5 run to lead 14-10. Two attacking errors from SDC ended the first in favor of the Lions.

The second set was the closest for SDC. They again started off the set in the lead, briefly, thanks to attacking errors from the Lions. There were a total of seven ties in the early going including the last at 14-14. But Vanguard used another large run, this one an 11-4 run to close out the set for the 2-0 lead.

Vanguard cruised in the third set. With the Hawks trailing 9-8, the Lions finished the set on a 15-2 run.

The Hawks will be back home on Tuesday as they host Westcliff at 7:30 p.m. SDC defeated the Warriors in the first game of the season in five sets.
