[Men's Volleyball] No. 1 Grand View Sweeps Graceland on the Road

Lamoni, IA – No. 1 Grand View men's volleyball swept the Yellowjackets of Graceland University 3-0 (25-18,25-18,25-21) Friday evening. The Vikings advance to an 8-1 record overall and 5-1 in conference play.

Grand View recorded 39 kills with a 40.8 hitting percentage. Viking defense held the Yellowjackets to a 7.1 hitting percentage.

Set 1: Grand View University 25 | Graceland University 18

The Vikings jumped out to an early 11-3 following a service run by Isidro Polanco (SO/Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic ). The Yellowjackets were able to close the gap to 15-12 but Grand View responded with a 7-2 run to seal the game. In 43 rallies the Vikings were able to record 13 kills led by Felix Chapman (JR/San Jose De Las Lajas, Cuba) and John Chamone (SR/Miami Beach, FL) with five each.

Set 2: Grand View University 25 | Graceland University 18

The set battled back and forth, no team taking more than a three-point lead until Grand View went on a 7-2 run to take a 21-14 margin. A final block from Chapman led the Vikings to take a 2-0 advantage in the match. Viking offense hit 52.2 percent and recorded 14 kills and only 2 errors while holding the Yellowjackets to an 8.3 hitting percentage. 

Set 3: Grand View University 25 | Graceland University 21

Grand View errors helped keep Graceland in the set, but the Vikings battled to come out with a clean sweep on the night. The Vikings took an early 15-6 lead but the Yellowjackets went on a 9-3 run to close the gap to three 18-15. Graceland's run was not enough to send the match into a fourth set as the Vikings shut down the Yellowjackets at the net and holding GU to a 15.7 hitting percentage and taking the third set 25-21.

Key Players…

Chapman led the Vikings at the net with 16 kills, a 46.4 hitting percentage, and three blocks while teammate Chamone chipped in 11 kills hitting a .500 and recording a team-high of seven digs. Blaze Kahikina (FR/Waianae, Hawaii) led the Vikings with four blocks and teammate DJ McInerny (SO/Honolulu, HI) tallied 33 assists.

The Vikings will host three home match next week in the Charles S. Johnson Wellness Center starting with No. 10 nationally ranked Clarke University on February 19 at 7 p.m.
