[Volleyball] Women's Volleyball Falls in Five on Senior Night

0 4

SANTEE, Calif. — In the last home game of the year for the SDC women's volleyball team, no one seemed to complain as the game went to the fifth and deciding set against La Sierra.

But the Hawks couldn't find the answer in the fifth set as the Golden Eagles gave the SDC seniors and the rest of the team a bitter taste winning in five (25-11, 25-17, 18-25, 20-25, 15-9).

The team also celebrated the five seniors before the match. Chelsea Lawrence tallied eight kills and three blocks. Melissa Pittelkau finished with an ace and two digs. Kelsey Henderson finished the day with six kills and two blocks. And Michelle Mercado led the team with 24 digs and two aces.

After the celebration, the Hawks looked sluggish in the first set as La Sierra rolled out to an 8-2 run. The Hawks came within one, but the Golden Eagles finished the set on a 15-2 run.

Early on in Set 2, there were a total of six ties including the last being at 11-11. But another large run sealed the deal for the Golden Eagles to take a 2-0 lead.

Tied 12-12 in the middle of the third, a service error, a bad set from LSU, and two attacking errors gave the Hawks a 16-12 lead. SDC would keep their lead and capture their first point of the match.

Facing another 11-11 tie in the fourth, the Hawks were able to find some wiggle room again. An attack error after a kill from Kaili gave the Hawks the fourth set win to force the deciding set.

With the crowd full of renewed energy, SDC came out with a 4-1 lead and held the lead until the Golden Eagles tied it up at 7-7. They would grab an 8-7 advantage and hold the rest of the way. SDC came within two points the rest of the set but couldn't overcome.

The Hawks will close out their season on the road with a trip to Life Pacific on Friday and Westmont on Saturday.
