[Volleyball] Hornets Fall to Red Lions in Close Match

SAINT LOUIS, MO- The Hornets came out swinging tonight as they took on the Red Lions of Lincoln Christian University. Despite winning the game on the defensive side, HSSU fell to LCU in straight sets (16-25, 19-25, 24-26).

Niya Jenkins (SO/Chicago, IL) and Tiffany Hopkins (JR/Chicago, Illinois) led the offensive efforts with eight kills each while Juniora Worthy dished out a team high 21 assists. Jhameka Lambert-Gully (JR/Belleville, Illinois) picked up a game high 16 digs while every other player for the Hornets dug up at least one attack during the match.

LCU's Baleigh Jones had a match high 11 kills while Maliah Feller-Blakemore handed out 32 assists.

Lincoln Christian took an early lead in the first set, getting up by as much as 10 to force HSSU to call a timeout. While Harris-Stowe would go on a 6-1 run to make it 21-15.

The Red Lions would score four of the last five points to take the first set 25-16.

Harris-Stowe would come out in the second set and take a 9-3 lead before Lincoln Christian came back to cut the Hornet's lead to 14-12. The Red Lions would score five consecutive points to take a 21-17 lead. LCU would end up getting back to back kills from Waid and Hazzard to take the second set 25-19.

HSSU gave it their all in the third set, trading points with LCU.

With the score tied at 24-24, an HSSU error and a kill from the Red Lions Feller-Blakemore would end the match and the third set at 26-24.

Harris-Stowe (1-16; 0-11 AMC) will play in their final game of the season on Thursday night when they host the Trojans of Hannibal-LaGrange University. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
