[Volleyball] Volleyball rides win streak to 2-0 homecoming weekend

0 6

MONTREAT, N.C. – Volleyball finished homecoming weekend 2-0 after a 3-2 win over St. Andrews Friday night (27-25, 17-25, 25-23, 22-25, 15-13), and a 3-1 win over Columbia International Saturday morning (25-15, 22-25, 25-17, 25-20). The Cavs are currently riding a four-game winning streak, their largest streak of the year, and have surpassed .500 in Appalachian Athletic Conference play. They currently sit at 10-13 (6-5 AAC).

In both matches, the Cavs came out with the win in the first set, but dropped the second set, which has been a common theme this season. "I think it's about the mental growing process of everything. We fight really hard and then we get complacent. We just have to have the mindset of pushing through the second set after taking the first," said head coach Kristy Kamer.

The Cavs' victory over St. Andrews came in a hard-fought, five-set, back-and-forth thriller. "That was a wild and crazy game of ups and downs of emotions. Overall, we had a tougher mindset. That fifth set just went back and forth, but we pulled together at the end to win it, which was exciting," said Coach Kamer.

Against Columbia International, Katie Stanton helped lead the Cavs to victory with 14 kills and only one error. Taylor Rouse was close behind with 10 kills, and China Brown-Woolfolk posted nine. Setters Bella Huerta and Abby Graham put up 22 and 20 assists respectively. Graham also boasted five aces. Vivica Nogueira led in digs with 13 while Hannah Wyngarden contributed eight.

"It's always a good thing when you win a five-setter and have to come back first thing the next morning and get that next match. Sometimes you get that exciting win, and then sometimes you come in and you're off that high so it's hard to push through. We did a pretty good job today," said Coach Kamer. "I'm super proud of the girls for how they played this week and finishing the week 3-0."

Up Next: The Cavs host AAC foe Union Tuesday, Oct. 6 as JV plays at 4:30 p.m. ET and varsity begins at 6:30 p.m. ET.
