[Volleyball] Hawks Split in Saint Katherine Tournament

0 1

SAN MARCOS, Calif. — After making the trek from Sacramento to San Diego, the SDC women's volleyball team traveled again to San Marcos where they split Friday in the Saint Katherine Tournament.

The Hawks fell to host Saint Katherine in three sets but turned it around and swept Providence Christian.

With the split, SDC is now 2-3 on the season. The loss gave the Sea Beggars their first loss in two games.

In the first set, the Hawks were able to find some breathing room going on a 10-2 run to take a 13-6 lead. Melissa Pittelkau and Anekka Guy contributed with kills in the latter part of the run. PCC regained their lead at 22-21, but the Hawks were able to go on a 6-3 run to win the first set in extras.

Set 2 saw the Hawks lead from the fourth point and on. The Sea Beggars held a slim 2-1 lead before SDC went on a 9-3 lead to go up 10-5. Of the nine points, six of them were unforced errors by Providence Christian. They weren't really tested throughout the set. Guy sealed the set with a kill off a pass from Jewel Mcdonough.

SDC had small pockets of runs in Set 3 to seal the sweep. Tied 10-10, the Hawks scored seven straight points to lead 17-10. SDC had to sweat off a late attempt from Providence Christian but that was ended thanks to a serving error.

Kelsey Henderson led with eight kills followed by Pittelkau's seven. Guy registered six and Chelsea Lawrence had five.

After playing five games in three games, the Hawks are off until Aug. 29 as they travel to Westcliff University in Irvine starting at 7 p.m.
