[Volleyball] Cavs Stay Hot With Road Win Over Wayland Baptist
PLAINVIEW, Texas- The Cavaliers (13-6, 4-3 SAC) stayed red hot on Saturday morning as they took down a very solid Wayland Baptist University (12-6, 4-2 SAC) team in only four sets. St. Gregory's started the match strong with a 25-19 win in the first set, but then the Pioneers came back and won the second set 25-18. The Cavs bounced back in the third set with a 25-19 win, and then put the match away with a 25-21 win in the fourth and fianl set.
Gabby Ware (JR/San Antonio, Texas) once again led the Cavaliers offense in kills with 15 in the match. BreAnna Smoak (JR/Iowa Park, Texas) had a very impressive and efficient performance as well. Smoak finished the match with 13 kills, with a .417 attack percentage, and she recorded a team-high in blocks with 6. Khyra Echols (FR/Plano, Texas) put away 9 terminations and Krystal Lopez (JR/El Paso, Texas) added 8 of her own. Sunny Clark (JR/Dublin, Texas) and Sarah Ahrens (JR/Wichita Falls, Texas) each collected 23 assists in the match, and Clark also recorded 17 digs. Defensively the Cavs were led by Kayley Davis (SO/Irving, Texas) and Natasha Rodriguez (SR/Pecos, Texas). Davis recorded a team-high in digs with 26, and she also led the team with two service aces. Rodriguez finished the match with 22 digs.
The Cavaliers have now won three straight matches and four out of their last five, to move to 4-3 in SAC play. The Cavs sit in sixth place in the SAC right now, but they are only trailing John Brown University (fourth place) by one game.
SGU will be back on the court on Tues., Oct. 3, when they host Langston University in Sumner Field House at 7 PM.
