[Men's Tennis] Tennis Wins Again

Four matches into their season, Williamson is standing at a place it has not been able to stand since the inception of the tennis program in 2010; they are at an even .500 record.  They improved to 2-2 are that way after a hard fought 6-3 home win over Bucks County Community College on Wednesday at Penn State Brandywine.   

The Williamson first doubles team of Chris Smith (FR/Tullahoma, TN) and John Coleman (FR/Chichester, PA) moved to 3-1 on the year as they pulled out a 9-7 win at first doubles to give Williamson an early lead.  The second doubles team of David Derby (FR/Pitman, NJ) and Joe Marchozzi (JR/Conshohocken, PA) lost a tough match at 2nd doubles but a short-handed Bucks squad was forced to default third doubles so Williamson moved took a 2-1 lead into singles play.

John Coleman was dominant in his match at second singles as he won quickly, 6-0, 6-2.  Joe Marchozzi won the first set of his match at third singles but dropped the next two sets to move Bucks to within a point at 3-2.  Dave Derby won a long match at fourth singles to put Williamson up 4-2.  Chris Smith lost a tough, three set match at first singles.  Bucks then was forced to default fifth and sixth singles to give Williamson the 6-3 win.

"Our guys battled.  It was a nice win for us and hopefully we learned some things today.  We have a big week next week prior to heading into the Region XIX tournament and our young guys keep improving.  I'm proud of their effort today," stated Williamson head coach Curtis Schofield.

Williamson next takes on nationally ranked Rowan College at Gloucester County on Wednesday, April 26.
