Sports Briefs: San Marin’s Shrestha secures shot at MCAL tennis title
San Marin High’s Devanshi Shrestha clinched her place in the MCAL singles finals with a 6-3, 6-0 win Tuesday evening over Marin Catholic’s Ariana Bazan at Novato High. The finals are tentatively scheduled for Wednesday. The forecast storm could push the matches to be rescheduled to Thursday.
Tam High teammates Siena Moglen and Chloe Mouret-Lafage were playing in the other singles semifinal late Tuesday. Mouret-Lafage eventually outlasted Moglen in three sets to move on to the final.
In the doubles tournament, Redwood’s Julia Povio and Alessia Balliet advanced to the finals with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Tam’s Annika Hakes and Payton Dunn. They’ll face another Tam duo, Bianco Botero-Cortes and Maya Riisgaard, in the finals. Botero-Cortes and Riisgaard advanced with a 7-6 (5), 6-3 win against Branson’s Paloma Vano-Rice and Talia Schneiter.
Shrestha beat San Rafael’s Lea Gurman in a first-round match, then advanced past Branson’s Simone Schachter, both 6-0, 6-0, to reach the semis. Bazan beat Terra Linda’s Kylie Lee, 6-2, 6-3, then held off Redwood’s Iryna Shastakoych, 7-5, 6-1, in the quarterfinals.
Men’s basketball
Semetri Carr and BJ Fisher never played together at Redwood High, but they are teammates now at Cal and helped the Bears to a season-opening 87-60 victory over CSU Bakersfield on Monday.
Carr, who played for the Branson School before transferring to Redwood for the 2024-25 season, had two rebounds in 12 minutes during his first college game. Fisher, who graduated from Redwood in 2024, did not play for the Bears in his freshman year. He saw his first action Monday, checking in for a minute.
The Bears (1-0) are scheduled to host Wright State on Thursday.
• Former Sir Francis Drake High (now Archie Williams High) basketball standout Alex Pribble coached the Idaho Vandals to a season-opening win over Washington State on Monday. Idaho (1-0) is scheduled to host Whitman on Friday, ahead of next week’s matchup with San Diego, which is coached by another Marin County legend, Steve Lavin.
“Big moment for our program, big day, big moment for the University of Idaho,” Pribble said.
Kristian Gonzalez scored a team-high 18 points for the Vandals, who led wire-to-wire.
Women’s basketball
San Domenico grad Carly Amborn sank a 3-pointer as part of a 10-point Cardinal run in the second half of Stanford’s 87-42 season-opening win over UNC Greensboro. Stanford (1-0) is scheduled to host Santa Clara on Thursday.
