Sports Briefs: Marin Catholic tennis earns dramatic victory over San Marin

Marin Catholic edged host San Marin, 4-3, with a dramatic third-set tiebreaker victory at No. 1 doubles on Tuesday as three matches went to tiebreakers during a taut afternoon on the courts. The Wildcats’ duo of Charlotte Fonkalsrud and Sofia Paletta took the first set in their match against the Mustangs’ Brooke Bested and Scottie Barksdale, and eventually wrapped up the 7-5, 3-6, 10-7.

The Wildcats won three singles matches, led by Ariana Bazan at the top of the order with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Emily McCoy. Natalie Martin and Ellie Damiani won at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, both in three sets.

A victory at No. 2 singles by Devanshi Shrestha gave San Marin a shot to win the match as the Mustangs won a pair of doubles matches.

Boys water polo

Andrew Wallace led Tam High with seven goals but the Red-tailed Hawks (0-2) dropped a tough match to host Menlo, 12-11, on Tuesday. Tam’s Jasper Feldman scored twice and grabbed four steals.

Girls golf

Adriana Livengood shot a low round 41 at Meadow Club on Tuesday to lead Marin Catholic past Archie Williams and Novato. Lexi Ferguson added a 43 as the Wildcats tallied a 203, ahead of the Peregrine Falcons (222) and Hornets (256). Kaiya Chiu led Archie Williams with a 52, followed by Elke Osweiler’s 53. Novato’s Hayley Picetti shot a 51, and teammate Alex Ruso came around at 65.

• Terra Linda’s Mia Schlotman took medalist honors with a 40 at McInnis Park, but San Marin took the win, 186-202, over the Trojans on Tuesday. Isabelle Kelly led the Mustangs with a 44.

Men’s golf

Branson School grad Ryan Herbst took fifth place in the Augsburg Fall Invite on Aug. 31 at Majestic Oaks in Ham Lake, Minn. Herbst shot a 20over 146 in the two-round tournament to lead St. Olaf to a third-place finish.
