Sports briefs: Redwood sweeps past Branson in tennis showdown

Alessia Balliet, Gabi Puentes, Ira Shostakovich, and Adrienne DeMos had singles wins for the Redwood High girls tennis in a 7-0 sweep against The Branson School on Friday.

Balliet picked up a 3-0, default win against Katie Warrin at No. 1 singles and the Giants won the other six matches in straight sets.

Redwood has won three consecutive MCAL championships but graduated a large group of seniors from last year’s team. Branson has met Redwood in each of the past three MCAL finals and defeated the Giants for the title in 2021.

• Kylie Lee, Chloe Sason, and Jamie Schmidt had singles wins for Terra Linda in a 6-1 win against Archie Williams on Friday. Lee topped Amalya Rajparia 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles while Sason and Schmidt won at Nos. 2 and 4 singles, respectively. The most competitive match of the day was won by Archie Williams’ Chloe Dupont, who defeated TL’s Mimi Kemp 5-7, 6-1, 10-3 at No. 3 singles.
• Divya Lourdu and Bailey Bowman picked up wins atop the singles ladder to lead San Marin to a 7-0 win against Novato on Friday. Elizabeth Bogala and Shirya Pannala also had singles wins for the Mustangs.

Girls volleyball

Marin Catholic picked up an impressive four-set win against St. Ignatius, posting a 25-12, 25-16, 19-25, 25-21 victory on Saturday. MC and St. Ignatius both made it to the CIF State Open Division playoffs last season. MC was the No. 4 seed and lost in the quarterfinals. St. Ignatius was the No. 3 seed and lost in the semifinals. Stats were not available at press time.

• Jade Curtin-Savala had 19 digs and went on a crucial late service run to help Tam secure a 25-18, 25-20, 21-25, 26-24 victory against Sacred Heart Cathedral on Friday night. Curtin-Savala’s run helped Tam win seven consecutive points and erase a 19-24 deficit to win the fourth set and the match. Natalie Stanford added 10 kills and six aces for Tam (4-0). Emmeline Sandgren had 30 assists and three blocks. Makayla Sheffer had eight kills and Isabella Randlett had six kills and four aces.
• Novato went undefeated in pool play before falling to Homestand in the gold bracket of the NorCal Tournament on Saturday. The Hornets (5-1) took down International 25-16, 25-16, defeated Heritage 25-23, 30-28, and bested Santa Rosa 25-19, 25-16.

Boys water polo

Nate Greenberg, a U.S. National Team Olympic Development Program selection, fired home seven goals to lead Archie Williams High past Valley Christian, 12-7, on Friday.

Nolan Anderson added three goals, while Nico Rendic and Cole Taplin rounded out the scoring. Josh Dixon had eight saves in the cage for the Falcons (1-0), who are scheduled to play Buchanan at the Roche Tournament next Friday.
