Canada’s Rebbeca Marino is one win away from qualifying for the US Open.
The Toronto native pulled out a victory in her second qualifying match against Japan’s Mai Hontama (6-1, 2-6, 6-1) on Thursday, setting up a Friday afternoon contest against Czechia’s Domnika Salkova on Friday with a chance for a spot in the US Open draw come Saturday.
A player requires three qualifying wins in order to get a spot in the main draw. Marino opened her qualifier run with a 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 win over Thailand’s Lanlana Tararudee on Monday.
Meanwhile, Marino was the most successful of the three Canadian women competing on the day, as Chinese-Canadian Carol Zhao and Oakville, Ont. native Cadence Brace both lost their second qualifying matches in straight sets.
Zhao lost to Italy’s Lucrezia Stefanini (6-1, 6-4), while Brace fell to Slovenia’s Veronika Erjavec (6-4, 6-4), rendering both ineligible to qualify for the final Grand Slam of the season.
While US Open aspirations will have to wait for the pair of Canadians, Marino now finds herself just one victory away from her sixth main draw at the event in her career.
