Sports Briefs: San Marin, Tam tennis earn drama-filled wins
San Marin held off host San Rafael, 5-2, despite some very tight action on the singles courts Tuesday. San Marin had already clinched the win, but San Rafael’s Forrest Reilly kept the intensity going as he rallied for a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (4) victory over Oliver Pool at No. 1 singles.
The Mustangs’ Alex Christfort won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, and Shawn Bested gave San Marin a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles. The Mustangs then wrapped up a sweep of doubles play for a 5-0 lead. The Bulldogs’ Roman Krumrey earned a 7-6 (0), 6-3 win at No. 3 singles to get San Rafael on the board..
- Tam High’s Witt Bulger took a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles against Fin Donnelly to clinch a 5-2 victory over Archie Williams High on Tuesday. The Red-tailed Hawks’ Diego Castillo won the first match of the day at No. 2 singles for Tam, which swept doubles action, including two matches which went to super tiebreakers. Wins by Dylan Donner and Porter Cook at Nos. 3 and 4 singles, respectively, kept the Peregrine Falcons in the action.
- The Branson School rolled to a 6-1 victory over Terra Linda on Tuesday as the Bulls won the top three singles matches behind Ishwar Jayaraman, Griffin Cooper and Gian Carlo a Marca. Rupert Atkins gave the Trojans a win at No. 4 singles.
Boys lacrosse
Tam High got an impressive effort from Colorado College recruit Amos Hexamer during an 11-3 victory over Marin Academy on Tuesday. Hexamer led the Red-tailed Hawks with three goals and two assists, while teammate Price Jeffris finished with three goals and an assist. Wade Hexamer hammered home two goals and an assist for the Hawks. Sophomore keeper Rocco Fazio was strong in the Tam cage with six saves on nine shots behind solid defense from Quinn Harte, Oskar Armour and Trevor Watts.
Marin Academy netminder Matt McKane, a Notre Dame recruit, had 14 saves. The Wildcats’ George Leary won 14 of 18 faceoffs to power the Marin Academy attack, which got goals from Tommy Winship, Chase Violich and Nick Castro.
- Redwood High celebrated Senior Day with a 18-2 victory over Novato on Tuesday. Luke Tempero and Emmitt O’Neil led the Giants’ attack. In other action Tuesday, San Rafael edged Branson, 6-5.
Girls lacrosse
Junior Alex Chamberlain and sophomore Maddy Brackett had four points each during San Marin’s 16-4 victory over Archie Williams on Tuesday. Chamberlain and Brackett each put up two goals and two assists for the Mustangs (10-4, 5-2 MCAL), while freshman Dani Seller had three goals. Mustangs freshman Izzy Coucoules and senior Lucy Cravens each had two goals and an assist, while freshman Molly Stafford netted a pair of goals.
- Nina Baker netted four goals and Lucy Miller assisted on five scores as Redwood beat Novato, 21-6, on Tuesday. In other action Tuesday, Branson powered past San Rafael, 18-2, and Tam beat Carondelet, 15-9, in a non-league contest.
- Marin Academy secured the top seed for the Bay Counties League West playoffs with Tuesday’s 15-9 victory over second-place University. The Wildcats (12-3, 5-0 BCL) wrap up the regular season on Friday against Head Royce. University (6-8, 3-2) will face Lick-Wilmerding on Friday, before the BCL playoffs begin April 20.
Boys golf
Low medalist Max Berg led Tam High to a round of 201, ahead of San Marin and Archie Williams on Wednesday. Berg shot a 37 at Indian Valley Golf Course, while Max Figueroa paced the Mustangs with a 39 and the Peregrine Falcons saw a round of 40 by Calvin Gundy.
- San Domenico picked up a crucial 176-183 victory over the Bay School on Tuesday to boost the Panthers’ postseason hopes. Low medalist Oskar Valiagua shot an even 36 at Peacock Gap for the Panthers. With a win against Stuart Hall on Tuesday, San Domenico can potentially clinch the fourth and final team berth for the Bay Counties League tournament, to be held May 5 at Peacock Gap.
Prep baseball
Sam Tavano and will Rothstein had the only two hits for San Domenico in Tuesday’s 14-0 loss to University at Albert Park. The Panthers (5-9, 1-4 BCL West)are scheduled to host undefeated Stuart Hall on Friday.
Boys volleyball
Giants senior Beckett Shewey registered 10 kills and three aces during Redwood’s 25-13, 25-19, 25-10 win over San Rafael on Tuesday.
