Two Canadian-born players will square off in the quarterfinals of the Almaty Open, but only one of them is representing the country.

Canada’s Gabriel Diallo will face No. 2 seed Alejandro Tabilo of Chile on Friday after both won second-round matches Wednesday at the ATP Tour 250 event in Kazakhstan.

Tabilo, who was born and raised in Toronto but chose to represent the birthplace of his parents upon turning pro, knocked off Maximilian Marterer of Germany 6-2, 6-4.

Diallo, from Montreal, recorded his second upset in a row as he beat world No. 96 Borna Coric of Croatia 7-6 (1), 6-4 to reach his first career tour-level quarterfinal.

Diallo, 23, is ranked 118th in the world. He reached the third round of the U.S. Open this summer, recording his first career Grand Slam wins in the process.

Tabilo, 27, is ranked 23rd in the world. He recorded the biggest win of his career earlier this year, downing Novak Djokovic at the Italian Open, and also won a pair of ATP 250 tournaments in Spain and New Zealand.

But Tabilo entered this week having lost nine of his past 10 matches.
