Leylah Fernandez

0 2

Canada’s Leylah Fernandez couldn’t find a way to finish off one of the top players on the WTA Tour this year.

China’s Zheng Qinwen rallied to beat Fernandez 5-7, 6-3, 6-0 in the third round of the Wuhan Open on Thursday.

Zheng, the gold medallist at the Olympics this summer and an Australian Open finalist earlier this year, has won 22 of her past 25 matches. She is seeded fifth in Wuhan.

Fernandez, ranked 28th in the world, snapped a four-match losing streak this week. The highlight was a first-round win over No. 12 seed Diana Shnaider.

Fernandez, from Laval, Que., and partner Aldila Sutjiadi of Indonesia will play in the doubles quarterfinals on Friday. Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski and New Zealand partner Erin Routliffe of New Zealand also are in the doubles quarterfinals.
