Bianca Andreescu

Bianca Andreescu is gaining some momentum after her best result in two years.

The Canadian made a big 65-spot climb to world No. 163 in the WTA rankings after her runner-up result in Rosmalen, Netherlands, despite losing the Libema Open women’s final to Liudmila Samsonova.

“It’s upsetting, but I know there are good things coming for me,” Andreescu said after the match.

“For me, this is definitely a step forward. I’ve been through a lot for quite some time, especially the last 10 months.”

This was just the second tournament the Mississauga, Ont., native has played since being sidelined for nine months with a back injury

It was the 24-year-old’s first final in two years, and she had an impressive three-set match in the quarterfinals against four-time grand slam champion Naomi Osaka.

The real question is what Andreescu’s health will be like as she battled a leg injury during the match. The next grand slam tournament on the schedule is the Wimbledon championships, which take place from July 1 to July 14.

Poland’s Iga Światek remains the top tennis player in the world, followed by American Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus.
