0 7

The boys tennis teams from Redwood High and The Branson School made quick work of their quarterfinal opponents in the North Coast Section Division I and II playoffs, respectively, on Thursday.

Both teams won their first six matches to comfortably move into Saturday’s semifinals. Redwood’s Jackson Sichel provided the clinching victory at No. 2 singles. The No. 4 Giants play No. 1 California on Saturday at James Logan High in Union City. The final takes place at the same venue later that day.

No. 2 Branson is set to face No. 3 Bishop O’Dowd at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday at Golden Gate Park. The final will take place later on Saturday. Top-seeded University also advanced, taking down No. 9 Marin Academy 6-1.

The Giants also got singles victories from Alejandro Puentes and Will Greenwald.

Chase Hoeveler, Ishwar Jayaraman, Mason Ogborne, and Griffin Cooper all had singles win for the Bulls, who ended up winning 7-0.

College baseball

College of Marin scored in bunches during a pair of NorCal Super Regional games on Thursday but had nothing to show for it at the end of the day following a 17-11 loss to San Joaquin Delta followed by a 14-13 loss to Butte.

The Mariners (28-17) were ousted from the double-elimination regionals following the loss to Butte.

Things looked promising for the Mariners in the early stages of Game 2, despite surrendering three runs in the bottom of the first inning. COM bounced back with eight runs in the second and three in the third to take a commanding 11-3 lead.

Butte scored eight times in the fifth and twice in the sixth to take a 14-11 lead. COM clawed back with two runs in the eighth inning but left the tying run on first base as Butte recorded the last out in the top of the ninth.

Former Novato High standout Derek Bartram hit two home runs against Butte, including a two-run homer in the eighth. Former Tam standout Matteo Bellisimo and Lucas Schaefer also hit home runs against Butte.

Bellisimo also homered against San Joaquin Delta. COM got homers from Wyatt Davis, Skylar Lenihan, plus former Terra Linda High standout Chris de Langis in that game.

Prep swimming

Marin Catholic’s Alyssa Kooy has committed to swim for Chapman University, a Division III school in the Southern California Interscholastic Athletic Conference.

Kooy finished second in the 50-yard free at the MCAL championships behind teammate Esme Quay and second in the 100 free behind Redwood’s Kate Deforrest. Kooy helped MC win both the 200 free relay and the 400 free relay.
