Sports Briefs: Marin Catholic tennis season ends with narrow NCS loss to Piedmont

Qas Vidyarthi and Felix Adam earned singles wins for the Wildcats, but No. 10 Marin Catholic fell to No. 7 Piedmont, 4-3, in Tuesday’s opening round of the North Coast Section Division II team tournament.

Vidyarthi nailed down a 6-0, 7-5 victory at No. 3 singles over Piedmont’s Nate Welch. Adam held on for a 7-6 (5), 7-5 win at No. 4 swingles aver Graham Alban. Marin Catholic’s Craig Parker and Toby Tobin lost 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 at No. 3 doubles.

Piedmont is scheduled to play No. 2 Branson at College of Marin on Thursday.

Beach volleyball

College of Marin’s Rachel Reher and Kailani Kwan-Sy are chasing gold as they open the State Championship at West Valley College in Saratoga on Thursday. The duo placed sixth in the NorCal Regional Championships in Sacramento over the weekend to earn their ticket for the State Championship.

Golf

San Rafael’s Alex Franklin earned his ticket for the 127th U.S. Open Championship on Monday. Franklin posted a 2-under 70 to finish in a tie for second place during the local qualifier at the Fountaingrove Club in Santa Rosa. Franlkin was three strokes off the winning 67 posted by Arizon’a Zach Missigman. The 2024 U.S. Open will be held at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina on June 13-16.

Baseball

Former San Francisco Giants player and mental health advocate Drew Robinson will honor Mental Health Awareness Month with a free forum at College of Marin on Thursday at 5 p.m. For tickets and information, visit eventbrite.com.
