Andy Murray reveals he has ruptured ankle ligaments and will ‘determine the next steps’ with Wimbledon swansong in doubt
ANDY MURRAY has confirmed he will be out for an “extended period” after rupturing two ankle ligaments during Sunday’s loss at the Miami Open.
The three-time Grand Slam champion, 36, who previously revealed he is “unlikely” to play beyond the summer, now faces a race to be fit for what is expected to be his final Wimbledon.
He confirmed the damning news in an Instagram post on Monday evening, revealing he has a full rupture of his anterior talofibular ligament and a near-full rupture of his calcaneofibular ligament.
Speaking on Instagram, he said: “Yesterday towards the end of my match in Miami I suffered a full rupture of my ATFL and near full thickness rupture of my CFL.
“I will see an ankle specialist when I return home to determine next steps.
“Goes without saying this is a tough one to take and I’ll be out for an extended period.
“But I’ll be back with 1 hip and no ankle ligaments when the time is right 
.”
Murray, who turns 37 in May, lost in three sets to Czech star Tomas Machac and revealed it would be his final appearance at the Miami event.
He scratched from his doubles contest with partner Sebastian Korda after the full extent of the injury blow became apparent.
The damage to the ATFL and CFL in the ankle will now be assessed when he returns to the UK.

Murray won Wimbledon in 2013 and 2016, adding the Slams to his 2012 US Open crown.
He underwent hip surgery in 2018 as a metal cap and metal cup were inserted to help him return to tennis.
Since then, his best Slam performances have come at Wimbledon in 2021 and the Australian Open in 2023 when he reached the third round of both.
Last month, Murray ended a four-month wait for a win when he beat Alexandre Muller at the Qatar Open.
Speaking in February about his future in the sport, he said: “I’m likely not going to play past this summer.
“I get asked about it after every single match that I play, every single tournament that I play. I’m bored of the question, to be honest.
“I’m not going to talk more about that between now and whenever the time comes for me to stop.
“But, yes, I don’t plan on playing much past this summer.”
