Sports briefs: Redwood tennis sweeps past San Rafael

Julian Zhang and Cal Fazal rolled to victories at the Nos. 1 and 2 singles spots, respectively, as the Redwood High boys tennis team took down San Rafael 7-0 on Monday.

The Giants dropped just four games all told. Tito Adams and Jacob Peitz also won singles matches for Redwood.

Boys golf

Terra Linda’s Derek Newhall shot a 36 at StoneTree Golf Club as the Trojans defeated San Rafael, 204-257, on Monday. Tyler Davis carded a personal-best 41 for the Trojans (1-1). Kai Payne shot a 45 for the Bulldogs.

Prep baseball

After not fielding a team in 2023, Marin Academy resurrected its program this season and played its season opener on Saturday, losing 11-1 to Bay School. MA got through the first two innings before surrendering seven runs in the third inning. The Wildcats got on the board in the fifth inning after drawing four walks from relief pitchers.

Sailing

The Pacific Coast Yachting Association recently recognized SEA, Sailing Education Adventures (San Rafael) for outstanding contributions to youth development through sail training; SEA received the Garrett Horder Memorial Trophy, 2023 for its work in youth development through sail training.

College softball

Dominican University scored five runs in the fourth inning to tie the game but Concordia scored a couple of runs in the sixth to pull out an 8-6 win in the second half of a doubleheader on Sunday.

Alyssa Rue had three hits in the game including a solo shot in the fifth inning to tie the game at 6-6. The Penguins (5-7, 0-4) dropped the first game 2-0 despite a solid seven innings from pitcher Shelby Keltner.
