Sports Briefs: Branson, Redwood to go to court for tennis crown

The Branson School and Redwood High are set to meet for the MCAL girls tennis championship on Thursday.

Branson on Tuesday clinched its title shot with a 6-1 victory over Tamalpais in the semifinals. The Bulls’ Katie Warren survived an early test from the Red-tailed Hawks’ Lina Stuart for a 7-5, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles. Branson swept the singles order, with wins by Audrey Gilmorr, Paloma Vano-Rice and Gaby Steele.

Tam’s lone win came at the top of the doubles order, as Maria-Jose Stuart and Natalie Popper came away with a 6-1, 6-3 victory.

Redwood swept San Marin, 7-0, in the other semifinal. The Giants’ Jordan Marotto held tough at No. 1 singles for a 1-6, 6-3, (11-9) win over the Mustangs’ Claire Zhu. Redwood’s Ella Povio, Julia Laury and Gwenn Richordei also won their singles matches.

Thursday’s final will be held at Novato High.

Men’s water polo

Archie Williams High alum Quinn Woodhead scored three goals to help his Italian club, Telimar, defeat Creation team Solaris, 11-9, on Monday in Euro Cup group play. Woodhead is an alternate for Team USA for the PanAmerican Games, which begin October 30. His brother, Dylan, is also on the Team USA roster for the PanAm Games.
