Sports briefs: Tam upsets Branson on the tennis courts

Tam High won a neck-and-neck girls tennis match against the Branson School, 4-3, on Friday. The Red-Tailed Hawks and Bulls split the first six matches, but Tam’s Maria-Jose Stuart and Natalie Popper played a solid game at No. 1 doubles for a 6-4, 6-4 victory to help lock down the victory against the Bulls for the first time in recent history, according to coaches.

• Archie Williams defeated Terra Linda, 6-1, on Friday behind singles wins from Amalya Rajparia, Carolyn Morris and Kathleen Schalit. The Trojans’ Kylie Lee took No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-3. The Peregrine Falcons’ Maya Evans and Chloe Dupont won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.

• Redwood continues to dominate play with Friday’s 6-1 victory over Marin Catholic. The Giants’ Gwenn Richordel won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, while Julia Laury and Molly Gallagher won at No. 2 and No. 4 singles, respectively. The Wildcats’ lone win came at No. 1 singles where Maya Mosher came out on top 6-4, 6-1.

Boys water polo

Junior Andrew Sternfels and senior Quin Concannon each scored six goals to lead Tam past Northgate, 19-16, and cap a 1-1 outing Friday at the Battle of the Creek tournament. Sternfels added four assists and two steals to lead the Red-tailed Hawks (14-4, 7-1 MCAL), while junior Fields Palmer added two goals and three assists.

In the earlier game, Tam fell to nemesis Monte Vista of Danville, 11-9, the third loss to Monte Vista this season. Sternfels netted three and added four steals and junior Bern Kent scored three goals. Tam next plays at 9 am Saturday at Northgate High.

On Thursday in San Anselmo, 14 different Red-tailed Hawks scored in a 25-3 win over San Domenico.

• Redwood defeated Gunn, 20-9, and Las Lomas, 9-3, at the Battle of the Creek. Terra Linda fell to San Ramon Valley, 11-8, and lost to Clovis, 11-10.
