Sports Briefs: Redwood boys gain momentum for MCAL tennis tournament with win
Redwood High swept Archie Williams, 7-0, on Friday in Larkspur to wrap up the boys tennis regular season. The Giants’ Jackson Sichel, Matteo Cubillos and Lukas Berger won their singles matches in straight sets. The Giants’ Jacob Peitz battled past the Peregrine Falcons’ Dylan Donner 2-6, 7-5, 10-5 at No. 4 singles.
Redwood (14-2) finished second in the MCAL standings and is scheduled to open the team tournament against third-place Marin Catholic (11-5) in Tuesday’s semifinals in Larkspur. Fourth-place Tam (10-6) will take on undefeated Branson (16-0). The finals are set for Thursday, with the singles and doubles championships to begin April 24 at College of Marin.
Prep baseball
San Marin made a two-run fifth inning stand up in a 2-1 victory at Redwood on Friday as the MCAL foes met in a non-league tournament. Redwood’s seventh-inning rally effort generated one run, but ultimately fell short.
The Mustangs (11-7, 7-5) made the most of their few opportunities in a two-hitter offered by Giants pitcher Rex Solle. The Giants collected four hits, with singles from Jack Moseley, Rory Minty, Gavin Soper and Solle.
The first-place Giants (13-3, 8-1) are scheduled to play College Park on Saturday as the tournament continues. San Marin will face Serra.
College baseball
Jacob Campbell scored the winning run on Steve Elsner’s groundoutin the top of the fifth inning as College of Marin edged Laney College, 3-2, Friday to sweep their three-game series. D’Andre Gaines had two hits for the Mariners (16-5, 9-3), who also got singles from Lucas Schaefer, Joey Taddie, Elsner and Jake Ferguson. Mariners starter Jake Verwiel (4-1) struck out five batters and waled two while scattering four hits over 6 2/3 innings.
Prep swimming
A deep Tamalpais High squad came up strong in a three-team meet with San Rafael and Branson on Thursday. The Red-tailed Hawks defeated the Bulls 144-31 in the girls meet, and the Tam boys defeated Branson 125-22.
Branson juniors Cameron Aryanpur and Maeve McAuley placed first in two events against both Tam and San Rafael. Aryanpur won the boys 50 free (22.21 seconds) and 100 fly (52.28). McAuley won the 50 free (25.87) and 100 back (1:06.96). Branson sophomore Nate Johnson won the boys 100 free (49.33) and placed second to Aryanpur in the 50 free (22.96).
The San Rafael girls defeated Branson 97-45 and the Bulldogs beat the Bulls 103-22 in the boys meet.
• Marin Catholic and Terra Linda split their dual meet on Thursday. The Wildcats won the girls meet 113-70, and the Trojans won the boys meet 127-33.
Holly Tarantino led a 1-2-3 finish with Isabella Kiriakis and Audrey Hemsworth in the 200 free for the Marin Catholic girls. Tarantino also won the 100 breast and Hemsworth won the 500 free. Other first-place performances for the Wildcats came from: Hannah Slaught (200 IM), Esme Quay (50 free, 100 back), Alisa Zhou (100 fly) and Alyssa Kooy (100 free).
Boys winners for Terra Linda included: sophomores Nicolas Arinduque (200 IM, 100 Breast) and Jack Middleton (50 Free, 100 Free), as well as junior Jackson Conway (100 Back), freshman Cam Hellar (200 Free), sophomore Andrew Chong (100 Fly) and sophomore Soren Jessen (500 Free).
Boys golf
Terra Linda’s Sean Madden carried the day with a 36 for medalist honors Thursday, but Tam’s depth prevailed in a 204-212 victory over the Trojans at Stonetree on Thursday. Max Berg led Tam with a 37.
