Sports briefs: Redwood, Tam set to battle for MCAL tennis title

Liam Carpenter rallied for a super-tiebreaker win at No. 1 singles, helping guide the Redwood High boys tennis team to a 6-1 win against Archie Williams on Wednesday.

Carpenter dropped the first set to Jake Magnusson but came back to earn a 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 victory. The Giants, who advance to host Friday’s MCAL championship game against Tam, also got singles wins from No. 2 Charlie Boyden and No. 4 Hayden Gerber.

Henry Pratt pulled out the lone win for Archie Williams rallying for a 4-6, 7-5, 11-9 victory against Jake Feehan at No. 3 singles.

• Witt Bulger pulled out a close match at No. 2 singles, securing an eventual 4-3 Tam victory against Branson in the other MCAL semifinal. Bulger outlasted Max Goldman 7-6, 7-6 to make the score 4-2 before Luke Tuscher won at No. 1 singles over Carson Harrell to pull the Bulls within 4-3. Tyler Byrne and Diego Castillo had the other singles wins for second-seeded Tam.
• San Domenico fell in the Bay Counties League West semifinals 7-0 against top-seeded University on Tuesday.

Women’s tennis

The Scott Valley 3.5 40+ team qualified for Nationals after winning Sectionals in Folsom this past weekend. The team went 5-0, defeating Broadstone in the semis and Sunnyvale in the final. The Nationals are set to take place in Scottsdale, Ariz., in October.

The team features Kristin MacLaggan, Laura Spence, Mary Beth Todd, Ashley MacDonald, Kim Hobson, Hallie Marshall, Kirsten Treais and Alexis Gulash.

Prep softball

Sadie Leonard struck out 19 hitters as Redwood and Marin Catholic again battled into extra innings before the first run was scored on Wednesday. Kaela Sparler and Ashley Weingart drove in runs in the top of the ninth as Redwood held on for a 2-1 win.

Sparler bunted in the go-ahead run then Weingart had a sacrifice bunt to make it 2-0. MC scored on an error to lead off the bottom of the ninth before Leonard struck out the side to end it.

Sparler had two of Redwood’s five hits and Sammy Horn had two of MC’s three hits. MC starting pitcher Rose Malen struck out 13 hitters in going head-to-head with Leonard for the second time this season. Redwood won the first meeting 1-0 in 10 innings.

• San Rafael scored eight times in the second inning to blitz past Novato, 10-0 in six innings. Sophia Everett, Kelsey McNair, Thomara Drummer and Imogen Cordoba all had two hits apiece for the Bulldogs. McNair struck out eight hitters in the first three innings then Drummer struck out seven in the final three while combining to throw a no-hitter.
• Eloise Weir and Emmaline Sekula had big days in the heart of Tam’s order, leading the Red-tailed Hawks to a 12-2, five-inning win against Terra Linda. Sekula had three hits, drove in two runs and scored two more batting fifth. Weir had two hits, drove in two and scored twice batting cleanup. Tam scored eight times in the third inning to blow the game open.
• Shelby Atkinson had a home run and a double to help guide San Marin to a 7-0 win against Archie Williams. Maddy Penick had a double and drove in a pair of runs while Katie Cook had a single, a double and an RBI. Brittany Casper struck out six and allowed four hits in the circle. San Marin remains one game ahead of Tam in the loss column for the last MCAL playoff spot and closes the season against Redwood, MC and San Rafael.

Swimming

Four swimmers from San Rafael — Elizabeth Stoilov, Irene Stoilov, Nadine Krone and Daniela Britton — plus Mill Valley’s Lisa Nevozhai led the way for Aqua Marin Synchro this past weekend at the age group Artistic Swimming meet in Sacramento.

Elizabeth Stoilov and Krone took first and second, respectively, in the Novice Figures 10 and under while Irene Stoilov and Nevozhai did the same in the 11-12 age group. Both Stoilov sisters and Nevozhai medaled in intermediate figures and solos while Britton took second in the 16-17 age group solo event.

Boys golf

Oliver Vilkin took medalist honors with a 1-over par 37 at Peacock Gap as Marin Academy fell 166-171 against University in a battle for first place in the BCL West. Charlie Hansen shot a 43 for MA.

College baseball

A week after averaging more than 15 runs a game in a sweep against Yuba, College of Marin players kept swinging hot bats in a 12-5 win against Napa Valley on Tuesday.

Trent Free went 4 for 4 with a home run, four RBIs and three runs scored to pace the Mariners (23-15, 14-5 Bay Valley Conference). Steven Elsner also homered and drove in three runs as the Mariners added to their single-season record for home runs.

The Mariners have won six in a row and nine of their past 10 games.

Prep baseball

San Domenico roared back from a five-run deficit to pick up a stunning 9-8 victory against Urban on Tuesday. Max Tavano had a triple, a home run and two RBIs for the Panthers while Ozzie Shenk had two hits and drove in three runs. West Middleton pitched 2.2 innings in relief to earn the win.
