[Tennis] Midland Wins Both Matches Over Tennis Teams
Doane Tennis traveled to Fremont on Sunday afternoon to take on Midland with the conference regular season titles on the line. However, due to high winds, both matches were moved indoors to the Fremont YMCA. The Warriors were able to pull out a pair of shutouts, 7-0, with a number of close matches going Midland's way.
In men's action, the Warriors won two of the three doubles matches for the first team point. Doane's lone win came at 2-doubles where the duo of Jose Purizaca (FR/Lima, Peru) and Federico Infante (SO/Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) defeated the 9th-ranked team in the region of Luca Struffi and Tycho Janssen, 6-4.
In singles play, the closest matches came at the top of the ladder. The marquee match was at 1-singles, where Jorge Chevez (SR/Panama City, Panama), ranked No. 10 in the region, took on Miguel Abete, ranked No. 11 in the region. Abete won a pair of close sets, 7-5, 6-4, to take the win.
In women's play, Midland swept doubles play. At 1-doubles, the team of Ava Macke (SR/Omaha, Neb.) and Liz van der Torre (JR/Greeley, Colo.) were defeated, 6-3, and at 3-doubles, the team of Ashlyn Kucera (FR/Grand Island, Neb.) and Kailyn Groski (JR/Papillion, Neb.) were edged, 6-4.
In singles play, Midland won each match in straight sets by picking up at least one break of serve in each set. At 2-singles, van der Torre posted the closest match at 6-4, 6-2.
The GPAC Tournament is next for the Tigers with the men receiving a bye in the first round as the 2-seed while the women will be the 3-seed and take on Hastings.
