[Men's Tennis] Men's Tennis Splits First Two Matches After Layoff

Doane Men's Tennis returned to the court this week after nearly a month off. The Tigers' first match was at Seward on Wednesday as they took on Concordia. The Bulldogs were able to edge Doane, 4-3. The following day, the Tigers returned home for a match-up with Hastings. Doane blanked the Broncos, 7-0, for their first shutout of Hastings since the 1970s.

In Seward, the Tigers started slow and dropped the doubles point to the Bulldogs. The point proved to be the difference as both teams won three singles matches. Doane won the 1, 2, and 3 singles matches, taking two of the matches in straight sets with the other (2-singles) going to a third set. Concordia did likewise at 4, 5, and 6 singles with one match (5-singles) going to a third set.

Back in Crete a day later, Doane looked as if they were able to shake off the rust from the long layoff as they coasted to the win over Hastings. The Tigers won all three doubles matches to take the early team lead. In singles action, Doane won each match in straight sets with Sam Coy (JR/Lincoln, Neb.) and Donat Beke (FR/Algyo, Hungary) holding their opponents scoreless in both sets at 5-singles and 6-singles, respectively. Jorge Chevez (JR/Panama City, Panama) won his match at 1-singles, marking his 30th dual victory as he sits 7th on the Tigers' win chart since the program restarted in the 1990s.
