0 5

Doane Men's Tennis went on the road to Liberty, Mo., for a pair of matches over the weekend against NCAA Division II opponents. The Tigers opened the action on Saturday with a 6-1 loss to Newman University (Kan.) before coming back on Sunday to post a 5-2 victory over William Jewell.

Newman
The Tigers lone team point came from a victory at 3-singles as Esteban Gutierrez (FR/Panama City, Panama) defeated Gustavo Gil, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5). The 1-singles position pitted two players that are regionally ranked in their respective divisions. Newman's Arthur Justo was ranked 19th in the last NCAA Division II ITA rankings (April 2020) while Doane's Jorge Chevez (JR/Panama City, Panama) is 3rd in the last NAIA ITA rankings (November 2020). Justo took the first set, 6-3, and then won in a tie-break in set two, 7-6 (7-2).

In doubles action, Newman earned the team point by taking two of the three doubles matches. Doane's victory came at 2-doubles where Federico Infante (FR/Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and Henrique Sakoda (JR/Sao Paulo, Brazil) defeated Gabriel Yaguar and Luca Penteado, 7-5.

William Jewell
The Tigers and Cardinals met for the second time this season with WJC winning the first match in Crete back in October, 4-3. Doane took the doubles point as they did the first time, however, the Tigers added four wins in singles action after only winning two in October.

William Jewell claimed the win at 1-doubles in a 7-6 (10-8) tie-break. The Tigers came back with wins at 2-doubles by Infante/Sakoda, 6-2, and at 3-doubles by Sam Coy (JR/Lincoln, Neb.) and Donat Beke (FR/Algyo, Hungary), 6-4.

Singles action saw Doane pick up wins at 2-3-4-6. Infante went to a tie-break and won 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 1-0 (10-8) at 2-singles. Gutierrez claimed a 6-1, 6-2, win at 3-singles. Coy was victorious at 4-singles, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2. Beke won 6-3, 6-2, at 6-singles.
