[Tennis] Tennis Sweeps Grand View Match-up

Doane Tennis traveled to Red Oak, Iowa, on Saturday to take on Grand View University. The Tiger women, playing their first match of the season, topped the Vikings, 5-2. The men posted a 4-3 victory over Grand View for their second win of the season.

In the women's match, Doane took the early lead by winning two of the three doubles matches for a 1-0 lead. Ava Macke (JR/Omaha, Neb.) and Liz van der Torre (SO/Greeley, Colo.) posted a 6-0 blanking at No. 2 while Huong Ngo (SO/Crete, Neb.) and Payton Stalder (JR/Omaha, Neb.) claimed the team point with a 7-5 win at No. 3.

In singles play, Amber Weston (FR/Mead, Colo.) won 6-3, 6-2, at No. 1 over Fredrika Kuttenkeulen. van der Torre and Ngo won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively. Makayla Rice (SR/Lincoln, Neb.) won by retirement, 6-3, 3-0, at No. 6.

The men also claimed the doubles team point as they swept through the action. Jorge Chevez (JR/Panama City, Panama) and Esteban Gutierrez (FR/Panama City, Panama) won 6-3 at No. 1 with Sam Coy (JR/Lincoln, Neb.) and Donat Beke (FR/Algyo, Hungary) winning 6-1 at No. 3. In the No. 2 doubles match, Federico Infante (FR/Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and Henrique Sakoda (JR/Sao Paulo, Brazil) won in a tie-break, 7-6 (7-4).

Doane took a 2-0 lead as Beke won 6-0, 6-1, at No. 6 singles. Grand View battled back to tie the match by winning at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. The Tigers used wins by Coy at No. 4 (6-3, 6-3) and Sakoda (5-0, retirement) to clinch the team win. The Vikings won at No. 1 in a tie-break to claim the final team point.

Both Tiger teams will travel to Hastings on February 21 for a friendly match against the Broncos. The competition will not be structured like a normal match and will not count on the team records. Doane's next match will be on March 6 in Liberty, Mo., against NCAA DII Newman University.
