[Men's Tennis] Men's Tennis Splits on Iowa Trip

Doane Men's Tennis opened up the 2021 slate on Saturday morning in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to play a pair of matches. In the opener, the Tigers were edged by Coe (Iowa), 5-4, but rebounded to take a 9-0 win over Dubuque (Iowa). Both opponents are NCAA Division III institutions.

The host Kohawks won two doubles matches which proved to be the difference as each match counted towards the team score per Division III rules. The teams took three singles matches apiece.

In singles play, Doane received victories from Jorge Chevez (JR/Panama City, Panama), Esteban Gutierrez (FR/Panama City, Panama), and Donat Beke (FR/Algyo, Hungary). Chevez needed three sets to take down Rami Hemaidan, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. Gutierrez was a straight-sets winner over Bo Wilson, 6-4, 6-0. Beke won in straight sets over Ethan Weber, 6-1, 6-4.

In doubles action, the team of Chevez and Gutierrez won 8-3 over Hemaidan and Wilson. The duo from Coe are ranked No. 13 in the NCAA DIII Central Region.

 

Dubuque
It was a clean sweep for the Tigers over the Spartans, winning each singles match in straight sets. In all nine matches, Doane's players did not give up more than one game in any match and were the first team to blank Dubuque this season..

In doubles action, Chevez and Gutierrez won 8-0. The teams of Federico Infante (FR/Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and Henrique Sakoda (JR/Sao Paulo, Brazil) along with Sam Coy (JR/Lincoln, Neb.) and Beke each posted 8-1 victories.

Chevez, Gutierrez, and Beke posted 6-0, 6-0 wins in their matches. Infante won 6-0, 6-1, Coy won 6-0, 6-1, and Sakoda won 6-1, 6-0.

 

The Tigers will return to action in one week when they travel to Red Oak, Iowa, to take on Grand View for their first match against a NAIA opponent this year. Doane is 1-2 on the season while the Vikings are 0-1.
