[Men's Tennis] St. Ambrose drops fall opener at Wartburg
Playing for the first time this fall, St. Ambrose dropped its 2020-21 season opener 6-3 at Wartburg Saturday.
The difference came down to singles play as the Knights took five of the six matches against the Bees, including a pair of third-set super-tiebreakers.
Jack Schieferdecker won the opening set before falling in his match at No. 2 singles 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), 12-10. Jacob Decker also fell in a super-breaker, losing his match at No. 4 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 10-8.
Matt Zuccato earned a win for the Bees, taking a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles.
SAU won two of the three doubles matches.
Decker and James Boustead cruised to an 8-2 win at No. 3. Zuccato and Connor Leibforth also won, picking up an 8-5 victory at No. 2 doubles.
The No. 1 team of Schieferdecker and Michael Vallejo-Miniter fell 8-5.
The Bees (0-1) will host Cornell next Saturday at Assumption High School.
