[Men's Tennis] Williamson's Top Tennis Player Honored for Academic Excellence

Though his tennis season was cut drastically short before it even started, that did not stop Williamson junior tennis player Adrian Alicea (JR/Sewell, NJ) from being honored by the United States Collegiate Athletic Association by naming him to their 2020 National Tennis All-Academic squad.  To be considered for the award, a student-athlete must be at least a second-year student and maintain a high overall Grade Point Average.  In addition, they must be a starter and make a significant contribution to their team's success. 

Alicea, a Power Plant Technology major, took the Williamson tennis team by storm last year when he earned the team's First Singles position.  He also played Second Doubles.  This season, he was again the team's First Singles player, while also moving up to First Doubles. 

"Though the season got cut short due to COVID-19, the USCAA thankfully allowed student-athletes who would have otherwise been eligible for the award had the season not been cut short, to still be considered for it," explained Williamson athletic director Dale Plummer. 

"We could not be more thankful to the USCAA for taking such a bold step in allowing student-athletes the recognition they rightfully deserve."

Second year head coach Jason Kutzura had nothing but great things to say about Alicea.

"Adrian is not only an outstanding player, he is also a fine young man and a real leader for us.  With five out of our six starters from a year ago graduating, I relied on Adrian a great deal and he did a fantastic job of leading this year's squad.  He was almost like having a second coach on the court."
