[Women's Tennis] Brescia Lady Bearcats pick up first victory of the 2020 season

The Brescia University women's tennis team held on for a 6-1 non-conference win over Oakland City on Saturday (Feb. 15).

Brescia took two out of three doubles matches for the doubles point, Eleni Stravolemos (SO/Novi Sad, Serbia) and Hannah-Joy Simms picked up a 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles over Audrey Wilson and Kaleigh Helm. Melony Dunaway (FR/Cynthiana, KY) and Mazvita Ngorosha (SO/Murewa, Zimbabwe) defeated Hanna Wilson and Keaton Whetstone 6-4 at No. 2 doubles, while Danielle Mattis (SO/Decatur, GA) and Sierra Thompson (SO/Springfield, IL) lost to Maizy Gilliland and Abby Massengale 6-3 at No. 3 doubles.

Brescia would win five of the six singles matches to secure the victory. Stravolemos defeated Hannah Wilson in straight sets 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, Mattis (SO/Decatur, GA) defeated Keaton Whetstone 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 singles. Dunaway won in a eight game pro set 8-6 against Abby Massengale at No. 5 singles and Thompson also won in a eight game pro set 8-4 against Alleyna Goedde at No. 6 singles, before Ngorosha would clinch the victory for the Lady Bearcats with a 6-4, 7-6(8-6) win at No. 2 singles against Audrey Wilson. The lone lost was at No.3 singles due to injury as Kaleigh Helm would pick up a default victory.  

The Lady Bearcats (1-0) are back in action on Friday (Feb. 21) at Centre Court in Owensboro, Kentucky against Georgetown University for a non-conference match. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
