Badboy Kyrgios in Nike slogan row after popping collar with ‘Just Do You’ slogan on during US Open

NICK KYRGIOS rowed with US Open officials over a Nike marketing slogan on his collar, saying “Just Do You.”

The Aussie had his collar scrutinised by during the warm-up of his second round clash with Frenchman Antoine Hoang, but claimed it “wasn’t a marketing thing.”

Kyrgios, who is facing a ban after blasting tennis bosses following a stormy first round win over American Steve Johnson on Tuesday, popped his shirt collar with a play on the famous 1990s Nike marketing motto.

The world No30 said he’d been working with the American sponsors on a different take to their ‘Just Do It’ branding.

That led an on-court official to accuse the 24 year-old of a dress-code violation.

Kyrgios eventually won in straight-sets but was heard arguing before play began.

He roared: “I’m not going to play until you show me the rule.

“I want to know the rule. I want to see the rule. I’ve seen shirts worse.”

Kyrgios folded down his collar soon after and had few problems winning 6-4 6-2 6-4 to set up a third round date with Andrey Rublev.

He explained the mix-up afterwards and said: “I think they thought it was a slogan, but it wasn’t.

“It wasn’t anything to do with a marketing thing. It was just a design issue.

“I think they must have read it wrong. I think they thought it said Just Do It, like the slogan. It was actually Just Do You.

“I think it was a mix-up.

“It’s all cleared up now. I can wear that. I can wear the collar up.”

There was a full house on the Grandstand court for the clash with the French wildcard proving , once again, that away from the crazy rants and bad behaviour, the boy from Down Under is a box office tennis talent.

The huge serve, unorthodox shot selection and interaction with the crowd — he had them laughing in the third set following a disagreement over an umpiring call — make his matches compulsive viewing.

And if the talented Aussie can keep his head, the chances are a decent run at a Grand Slam will quickly follow.

It’s a very big if – but the talent is undoubtedly there.

Yet while his win was straightforward, the drama of the day was left to American duo Taylor Townsend and 15 year-old sensation Coco Gauff who both bagged brilliant wins.

Townsend superbly sent Wimbledon champ Simona Halep packing in a three set thriller while Gauff belied her age once again to beat Timea Babos and set up a blockbuster clash with world no1 and reigning champ Naomi Osaka on Saturday.
