Rising tennis star ready to bounce back

From the exhilaration of her first tour victory to the discouragement of a significant injury, Bianca Andreescu has experienced the highs and lows of life as a professional tennis player.

She saw it all in only a month.

A rising 19-year-old Canadian star, Andreescu plans to be back to full strength as she joins Team Americas for the Aurora Games.

"My shoulder is doing well," Andreescu said in reference to an injury that forced her to withdraw during the French Open and skip Wimbledon. "Rest was a part of it, but also rehab and strengthening. I'm thankful to have an amazing team of trainers, coaches and doctors who have made this healing process a smooth one."

It certainly has been a breakthrough year for Andreescu, born in suburban Toronto to Romanian parents.

She shocked the tennis world in March by winning the BNP Paribas Open, a tournament at Indian Wells, Calif., that ranks just below the majors on the tennis landscape.

Andreescu beat former world No. 1 and three-time Grand Slam winner Angelique Kerber in the final.

"It definitely changed my career," Andreescu said. "I gained so much confidence from it. While I wasn't expecting to win such a big tournament so early on in my career, I put in so much work and trained hard for it. It's a testament to what can happen for you if you put in the work and are prepared for any opportunity. It's an amazing feeling, but now I've set new goals for myself that I can focus on."

Andreescu went from Indian Wells to Miami for another "premier mandatory" tournament, beating two seeded players en route to the fourth round. She had to retire during a match against Anett Kontaveit because of her shoulder problems.
