Dylan Alcott's Logies Speech Might Be the Best Thing You See All Night
There's no stopping Dylan Alcott! The wheelchair basketball and tennis player, radio host and motivational speaker has just added 'Logie winner' to his ever-growing list of achievements. Accepting the Most Popular New Talent award for his hosting work on The Invictus Games Tonight show and The Set, he took the opportunity to highlight the importance of diversity on our screens.
He revealed he "used to hate having a disability" due to the lack of visibility of people with disabilities on TV, saying, "one of the reasons I did hate it, was because when I turned on the TV, I never saw anyone like me. And when I did see someone like me, it was a road safety ad where someone drink drives, has a car accident, and then the next scene's someone like me whose life is over. That's not my life. "
He also said that one of the reasons he wanted to get on job on TV was to show that "people with disability can be funny, talented, humorous, just normal people enjoying their lives."
Say it louder for the people in the back, Dylan! It is imperative that Australian TV continues to improve its level of diversity, and Dylan nabbing this award is certainly a good start. If you watch one thing from the Logies tonight, let it be this.
