[Tennis] Hubbs Tabbed to Head Tennis Program

Doane University Director of Athletics Matt Franzen has announced the selection of Ed Hubbs as Head Men's and Women's Tennis Coach for the Tigers. Hubbs as served as the Director of Tennis for Doane since June 2016.

Hubbs, a 1976 graduate, played on the Tigers' dominant tennis teams in the 1970s, going undefeated in conference play all four years in both singles and doubles action. He was a four-year conference and district champion, qualifying for NAIA Nationals on three occasions.

"We are excited to announce that Ed Hubbs will be taking the reigns as our Head Coach in both our women's and men's programs," Franzen commented. "Ed has been on staff (the last three years) and was instrumental in our recent GPAC Men's Championship. We believe that he can bring this type of success to both programs and also teach the work ethic and character that we value and expect in our student-athletes."

Prior to his return to Doane, Hubbs served as the Head Tennis Coach at Creighton University for 17 years, earning Missouri Valley Conference Women's Coach of the Year in 1994. He left Creighton to take over as Director of Tennis for the City of Omaha Parks and Recreation Department.

"Doane has been a special place for my wife and I as we are both alums and played tennis for the Tigers," Hubbs said. "After volunteering the last three years, the coaching bug returned and with the position opening up, I didn't want to see the program possibly take a step backwards. I believe we began to bring back a pride and positive culture that existed previously and I want to build on that tradition. Coaching where you played is special and I won't take this opportunity for granted."

The position came open when Seth Harris took another position in Texas. Harris was the 2019 GPAC Men's Tennis Coach of the Year and led the Tigers to their first regular season conference title since 1980.

Hubbs was inducted into the Doane Athletics Hall of Fame in 2014 and into the Nebraska Tennis Hall of Fame in 2003.

Doane will also add a graduate position to the program. Ignacio Morell will be the graduate assistant for Hubbs. Morell, the 2018 GPAC Men's Player of the Year, graduated in May from Doane. Morell finished his career with 38 wins in singles play and 42 wins in doubles play.
