Federer defeats Isner for Miami Open title

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Roger Federer became tennis' first multiple champion of 2019 when he won his 101st career title Sunday by beating defending champion John Isner in the Miami Open final, 6-1, 6-4.

Isner hurt his left foot and limped badly through the final few points.

Federer was the Dubai champion on March 2, and was runner-up at Indian Wells two weeks ago. He's 18-2 this year.

Auto racing: Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton profited from Ferrari's latest failure and won the Bahrain Grand Prix. The race looked likely to finish a Ferrari 1-2 for Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel. But Vettel cracked under the pressure of Hamilton's attack with less than 20 laps left and span out of contention. Race leader Leclerc's engine started losing power with under 10 laps left, allowing Hamilton to shred a 10-second deficit and secure a 1-2 for Mercedes as Valtteri Bottas passed Leclerc with three laps to go.

College hockey: Providence, playing on its home ice at Dunkin' Donuts Center, shut out Cornell 4-0 to advance to the Frozen Four in Buffalo. The East Regional champion Friars (24-11-6) will take on Midwest Regional champ Minnesota Duluth (27-11-2), which beat Quinnipiac 3-1, on April 11. Cornell finished 21-11-4 and Quinnipiac finished 26-10-2. The other Frozen Four semifinal will pit West Regional champ Denver (24-11-5) vs. Northeast Regional champ UMass (30-9-0).

MLS: Wayne Rooney scored and assisted on a goal by Steven Birnbaum and D.C. United beat Orlando City 2-1. ... Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored on a pair of penalty kicks to help the Los Angeles Galaxy beat the Portland Timbers 2-1,
