ESPN streaming service crosses one million subscriber mark

ESPN's streaming service has signed up over one million subscribers since its launch in April, the company announced on Thursday. The streaming service, dubbed ESPN+, is priced at $4.99 a month and offers live viewing of Major League Baseball and National Hockey League games, as well as college football and soccer games, Grand Slam tennis and Ultimate Fighting Championship matches. "Combining sports, technology and the ESPN brand is a very powerful combination, and we are just getting started," said Jimmy Pitaro, president of ESP and co-chair of Disney Media Networks, in a statement. Disney-owned ESPN has struggled in recent years, losing millions of subscribers to cable channels, but the success of ESPN+ in the past few months could mean Disney is recouping some of those viewers. Shares of Disney have gained 3.3% so far this year, while the S&P 500 has gained 9.4%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average has gained 6.8%.
