Stanford women win NCAA tennis title

The Stanford women’s tennis team became the lowest seed to ever win the NCAA championship, beating Vanderbilt 4-3 in the final in Winston-Salem, N.C., on Tuesday.

The Cardinal (24-3) entered the tournament as a No. 15 seed, but finished the season on a 20-match winning streak.

Five years ago, Stanford entered the tournament as a No. 12 seed and won the title — at the time the lowest seed to accomplish the feat.

In rolling to its 19th NCAA title (20th overall, including a 1978 Association for Intercollegiate Athletics crown), Stanford beat No. 2 seed North Carolina, No. 7 Georgia, No. 3 Duke and top-seeded Vanderbilt.
