Serena commits to San Jose tournament
The San Jose stop on the women’s tennis tour is gaining momentum. Serena Williams has announced her commitment to the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic scheduled for July 30-Aug. 5 on the campus of San Jose State.
This will be Williams’ first appearance in the Bay Area since she won the tournament — then known as the Bank of the West Classic (at Stanford) — in 2014. She joins Maria Sharapova, 2017 U.S. Open finalist Madison Keys and Coco Vandeweghe, who lost to Keys in last year’s Stanford final, among the early entries.
Williams has endured a long recovery from the birth of her first child, a daughter named Olympia, last September.
