[Women's Tennis] Cavs Battle Covenant in Opener

The Cavs' women's tennis team opened their fall season on Friday against Covenant College (GA). The Scots arrived ready to play and left with a 9-0 road victory over Montreat (0-1) at the Patricia Cornwell Tennis Center. The match was a scrimmage for the visitors from Lookout Mountain, Georgia and a regular season match for the hosts.

"Covenant is a great team, really strong players. But our players focused on fighting for each ball, each point, and each game no matter what the outcome," said head coach Andrew Cobb of his team's effort.

Included among the highlights for the home team was Katie Dillon (JR/Charlotte, NC) winning her exhibition match, 9-7. Exhibitions are held for players not in the 1-6 single slots. Dillon is a two-sport athlete, also competing for Montreat each winter on the hardwood. Her basketball coaches, Meghan Austin and Dasha Sharova were on hand to root on Dillon and her fellow Cavaliers. Both Dillon, a Charlotte native, and her coaches see the footwork required of each sport as having a reciprocating benefit on the other. The women's fall tennis season concludes on October 7, while basketball tips off against Columbia International University on November 4.

Cobb was upbeat afterward, looking forward to upcoming matches in Tennessee against Maryville College (0-0)  and Johnson (0-1) on October 1.
